Registered Social workers apply relationship building skills and the principled use of counselling and psychotherapy approaches in their helping role. Counselling may focus on building solutions to a specific problem such as difficulty managing school workload, or stress. Psychotherapy can be more long-term and focus on unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving. These can include substance misuse or angry outbursts. Individuals may think, “I’m going to get fired,” or “I’m not good enough.” Counsellors and psychotherapists aim to understand the difficulties and symptoms experienced by individuals, assist in better preparing people to manage various life stressors, inspire motivation to reach personal goals and provide opportunities to develop skills, progress, heal and function.

Counselling and Psychotherapy. What Do They Mean?

Life challenges can leave many individuals feeling overwhelmed, distressed, and can find it difficult to manage even the smallest of tasks. The reasons each person approaches counselling are unique. Quite often, it is a need to understand what is happening. Questions may emerge as to when the unhelpful experience will end, curiosity of where to go next, wondering why the problems linger, and how to rebuild and move forward. Counselling and Psychotherapy can help.

Both counselling and psychotherapy describe professionals who use “talk-based” methods to support you through and help you to manage many of the challenges you are experiencing. Though both are similar, there are some differences as well. Generally:

Counselling is viewed as short-term (a few sessions to months), offering support to build solutions for current issues such as grief or a sudden crisis.

Psychotherapy tends to be long-term (months or years), and can include exploring past trauma or depressive moods that keep coming up, and disrupts ones feelings and behaviours.
